Brief Summary

Results The overall incidence of postoperative stiff painful shoulder was 18.7%. 71 patients underwent rotator cuff repair RCR with 13 (18.3%) developing postoperative stiff painful shoulder. Performance of a rotator cuff repair surgery did not significantly change the incidence of postoperative stiff painful shoulder. Patients who developed postoperative stiff painful shoulder scored 1.30 units higher on an 11-point pain scale from weeks four to ten postoperatively, requiring opiates twice as frequently at week four (36.0% vs 17.4%,)and six times more frequently at week seven (24.0% vs 3.7%, ). This translated to 60% of those requiring strong opioids at week 7 developing postoperative stiff painful shoulder (6/10, 60.0% vs 19/124, 15.3%). Additionally, women aged 45 to 55 were more than three times more likely than other women to develop postoperative stiff painful shoulder (6/12, 50% vs 6/34, 17.7% ).

Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Development of postoperative stiff, painful shoulder following rotator cuff repair, subacromial decompression or distal clavicle resection as assessed by the treating surgeon.[10 to 12 weeks postoperatively.]
