Brief Summary

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of Liane Collot d’Herbois medical painting therapy in patients with essential tremor and its durability. As secondary outcomes, to evaluate the indicators of quality of life, anxiety, and depression. Methods: a randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, prospective, longitudinal trial developed in fifty months between 2018 and 2022. Eligible patients were randomized and allocated to the Experimental art therapy group (Geta) and the Aleatory drawing group (Gda). The motor inclusion and exclusion criteria used were the statement published by the Movement Disorder Society in 1998 (Deuschl, G). The patients were double-blind evaluated on aspects of tremor by neurologists specializing in movement disorders, using the Fahn Tolosa and Marín scale. The scales WHOQOL-BREF to assess the quality of life, Anxiety, and Depression Beck Inventories were used. The intervention protocol was 16 sessions, and the patients were assessed at four different times. Results: Of the 36 eligible volunteers, 34% dropped out, and n16 (Geta) and n8 (Gda) completed the protocol. Comparing the correlation of the paired samples of the 1st and 2nd evaluations, after the therapeutic intervention, Geta showed significant improvement in all subgroups evaluated: Location and Severity p=0.031, Motor Tasks p=0.006, Functionality p=0.43. The results of 6 from 10 quality-of-life domains observed, in the comparison to the paired samples between the 1st and 2nd, and 1st and 4th evaluations, Geta presented improvement with statistical significance scores. The diminishing of anxiety and depression symptoms reached statistical significance scores. Gda presented improvement in depression symptoms. Conclusion: The Geta acquired benefits from medical painting therapy diminishing the essential tremor symptoms as well as anxiety, and depression signs, and enhancing the quality of life domains.
