All healthy late preterm ( > 34 weeks) and term neonates with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia under phototherapy (as per American academy of Pediatrics 2004 guidelines) for a minimum of 8 hours were included in the study
All the infants with major congenital malformations, those with APGAR scores < 4 at 5 minutes , those in whom jaundice occurred within the first 24 hours of life, those with total serum bilirubin >18 mg/dL at the time of admission or the rise of bilirubin >0.5mg/dl/hour in initial 8 hours of starting phototherapy, those infants with hemolytic cause of jaundice (DCT positive), those infants with the total serum bilirubin falling in the exchange range at the time of admission, those requiring NICU admission for any reason other than jaundice and those with direct bilirubin > 15% of total bilirubin or direct bilirubin > 1.5mg/dL were excluded from the study.
