A STUDY TO ASSESS THE SPECTRUM OF URINARY BACTERIAL ISOLATES AND THEIR ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY AND RESISTANCE PATTERN IN PATIENTS WITH URINARY TRACT INFECTION ADMITTED IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT OF A HOSPITAL
- Conditions

- Brief Summary
The work up for urinary tract infections (UTIs) will include: urinalysis, Gram staining, and urine culture. The mode of collection of urine specimens will be noted: viz supra pubic aspiration, urethral catheterization, or midstream clean catch specimen .The threshold for establishing UTI will include finding 2-5 or more white blood cells (WBCs) or bacteria per high-power field (HPF) in a centrifuged urine sediment. In voided urine specimen, bacterial counts ≥100,000 CFU/mL will be considered diagnostic for a UTI .In catheterized specimens 10000 CFU/mL urines will be considered significant. In supra pubic aspiration specimen any concentration of CFU/mL will be counted as true UTI [6].Bacteriuria without pyuria suggests contamination or colonization and will not be included in the analysis. Organisms, isolated from clinical specimens, will be identified by culture using standard microbiological technique. In patients who are culture positive the demographic data, microrganism grown will be identified and sensitivity patterns of these organism will be seen. After that patient will be assessed on the basis of risk factors which are diabetes mellitus ,hypertension ,indwelling urinary catheter ,duration of ICU stay, Patients on any steroid, duration of antibiotics, coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease,COPD,cancer, heart failure and surgical intervention.
