Inclusion Criteria

•Age > 18 years

•Newly intubated patients requiring mechanical ventilation for a minimum period of 5 days

Exclusion Criteria

•Patients with pneumonia at the time of hospital admission

•Patients with known allergy to chlorhexidine or povidone iodine

•History of aspiration of oral or gastric contents prior to or during the process of intubation

•Tracheotomised patients

•Patients at risk for chemical meningitis ( nasal bone fracture, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea)
