My Changed Body Body Image Intervention for People with Endometriosis: A Randomised Feasibility Study

My Changed Body is a body image intervention that aims to increase people's self-compassion towards their body through the independent completion of a series of online writing tasks. It has been shown to be effective at improving the body image concerns of breast cancer survivors and, given there are some similarities between the body image concerns of people who have survived breast cancer and those with endometriosis (e.g., scarring, swelling, etc.), it was thought My Changed Body might also be relevant for people with endometriosis. We therefore aimed to see how feasible it is to conduct this intervention in this subgroup of the population and looked at how easy it was to recruit, how many people completed the tasks, how many people stayed in the intervention for the follow-up periods, and some very early exploratory assessment of whether the intervention changed self-compassion levels. Strong recruitment and participant satisfaction rates were found, though the completion and retention rates were both low. The early analyses did not show a significant change in self-compassion levels, however, these results are not conclusive. Overall, My Changed Body seems to be a possibly worthy intervention for people with endometriosis, but it would be beneficial to reduce the number of writing tasks from 6 to approximately 3-4 ahead of a full-scale randomised-control trial.
