ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE AMONGPREGNANT WOMEN REGARDING NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND DRUGS

INTRODUCTION:

Pregnancy is a dynamic change in a woman requiring excessivecare as the nourishment of the foetus is directly through the placenta of themother. Nutrition plays a pivotal role in pregnancy. Prescribing drugs inpregnancy is a challenge to a physician mainly because of the possibility ofteratogenicity with medicines which it is inevitable.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

To assess knowledge, attitudes and practices on nutritionand drug among pregnant women and to evaluate prescribing patterns and categorizeaccording to the FDA

JUSTIFICATION FOR THE STUDY:

Assessment of pregnant women’s knowledge, attitudes andpractices on nutrition and drug is important. This evaluation will bring outthe facts regarding the consumption of nutritious food and use of medicationsduring pregnancy.Evaluation of drug prescriptions in pregnancy is vital. Thiswill give information regarding the patterns of drug use in pregnancy forvarious conditions. Moreover, the adherence to the prescribed drugs can beidentified. The study will also categorize the prescribed drugs and also nonprescribed drugs that was used and reported by the participants as per the FDA.This study helps to know the mother’s point of view towards the nutrition andthe drugs

METHODOLOGY:

A prospective cross sectional study will be conducted for aduration of 8 months among the pregnant women of all three trimesters presentingto OPD and admitted in the obstetrics and gynaecology department. Details willbe collected in a suitably designed data collection form. KAP questionnaire is developedby referring to various primary, secondary and tertiary resources ofinformation then administered to the participants.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Sample size is 264. Data will besummarized using descriptive statistics.

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES:

This study will help to determine knowledge, attitude andpractice on nutrition and drug in pregnant women. Food habits of the pregnantadolescents are obtained. Percentage of drugs prescribed from FDA pregnancydrug risk category and their documentation. Adherence to the prescribed drugsand reason for non adherence can be identified. Overall mothers point of viewtowards the nutrition and the drug intake will be acquired.

Pregnant women in their first, second and third trimester who are willing to participate in the study.

Exclusion Criteria

Pregnant women who refused to participate in the study.
