All diagnosed patients of bronchial asthma (age group 18-55 years of either sex) presenting with exacerbation, as defined by
-patient breathlessness on slight walking/talking/at rest
-patient able to talk in only words/phrases/incomplete sentences without breathlessness
-respiratory rate >20 per minute
-presence of wheezing on chest auscultation
and undergoing treatment for the same, either on outdoor patient basis or admitted to a medicine unit of Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital, New Delhi will be included in the study.
The following patients will be excluded from the study-
i.Patient with any other co-existent and active pulmonary or non-pulmonary pathology.
ii.Patient on drug treatment for any other concomitant disease or disorder.
iii.Imminent respiratory arrest as indicated by-
-Drowsy/confused patient.
-Paradoxical thoraco-abdominal movements with respiration.
-Absent wheeze.
-Bradycardia (pulse <60 per minute).
iv.Evidence of active infection on chest X-ray.
v.Patient who received systemic corticosteroid in last 4 weeks.
vi.Patients who are contraindicated for systemic corticosteroids.

Name Time Method Change in serum levels of survivin and M 30 apoptosense in acute exacerbation of asthma patients on treatment with systemic corticosteroids.Timepoint: At the initiation of systemic corticosteroids, then 7 days later, and then depending upon improvement in symptoms 21 days thereafter
- Secondary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method Correlation between asthma severity score as measured by SOA questionnaire and apoptotic marker level. <br/ ><br>Change in acute quality of life scores in asthma as measured by QOLtech AQLQ questionnaire, after treatment with systemic corticosteroids. <br/ ><br>Timepoint: At the initiation of systemic corticosteroids, then 7 days later, and then depending upon improvement in symptoms 21 days thereafter
