Primary Endpoint
To compare the first attempt success rate of radial and ulnar artery cannulation under ultrasound guidance in obese and non-obese groups

Study Overview

Brief Summary

Invasive bloodpressure monitoring is commonly done. Radial artery is commonly cannulated. With the advent of USG deeper arteries like ulnar artery can even be cannulated. In obese patients artery cannulation is proposed to be difficult but we expectit to be done with more ease under USG guidance. Comparison of first attemptsuccess rate of ulnar versus radial arterial cannulation under USG guidance inobese and non-obese groups of patients has not yet been studied.

  • ASA 1 and ASA 2 patients
  • age 18 to 65 year
  • positive modified Allen and inverse Allen test
  • undergoing elective surgery under anaesthesia (general or regional) and requiring arterial cannulation.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Following patients will be excluded:
  • patients not giving consent
  • patients having coagulopathy
  • presence of local anatomic distortion (traumatic or congenital)
  • presence of local site infection/cellulitis
  • history of prior surgery in the area

Outcomes

Primary Outcomes

To compare the first attempt success rate of radial and ulnar artery cannulation under ultrasound guidance in obese and non-obese groups

Time Frame: At the time 0f arterial cannulation

Secondary Outcomes

  • 1. ease of insertion of cannula-easy (1 attempt), difficult (2-3 attempts), failure (more than 3 attempts)(2. Cross-sectional area, maximum internal diameter and depth from skin surface- in short and in long axis view)
