The goal of this study is to evaluate Grip'n'Play, a set of tablet games controlled with the SensoGrip pen, which provides visual feedback on grip and writing pressure. The main questions this study aims to answer are:
- Are the Grip'n'Play games technically reliable and easy to use?
- Do children enjoy and accept the games?
- Are children motivated to use the games?
- Do children use the games regularly compared with a handwriting practice workbook?
Participants will:
- Use both, the Grip'n'Play game, and a practice workbook for handwriting-related activities.
- Complete the activities over the study period.
- Provide information about their experience, motivation, and use of the activities through study assessments conducted by the research team.

This study aims to evaluate Grip'n'Play, a serious game developed to support early handwriting-related skills in preschool and early school-age children. Grip'n'Play is played on a tablet and is controlled using the SensoGrip pen, an innovative input device that responds to grip pressure, pen-tip pressure, pen angle, and movement. These inputs are used to control characters and actions within the game.
Grip'n'Play consists of nine mini-games connected by a story that guides children through the game environment. Children can also create and customize their own character, providing a more engaging and personalized playing experience.
The study aims to evaluate the technical performance, usability, acceptance, motivation, and adherence associated with Grip'n'Play compared with a conventional paper-based practice workbook.
This is an 8-week randomized controlled mixed-methods crossover trial involving 15 children of preschool or early school age who experience difficulties related to early handwriting development. During the study, families will use both Grip'n'Play and a handwriting-related practice workbook in their home environment. Participants will use one intervention for 3 weeks, followed by a 2-week washout period, and then use the other intervention for 3 weeks.
Data will be collected through questionnaires completed by parents and children, as well as interviews conducted after completion of the study. Parents will complete questionnaires assessing technical performance, usability, acceptance, motivation, and adherence after each intervention period. Children and parents will jointly complete child questionnaires after each intervention period. At the end of the study, children and parents will participate in an interview about their experiences. Occupational therapists will participate in a focus group to provide additional feedback.

- •for Children:
- •Attendance in the final year of kindergarten, preschool age, or Grades 1-2 of primary school
- •Participation of at least one parent or legal guardian
- •Parent or legal guardian agrees with at least one of the following statements:
- •The child enjoys writing less than other children
- •The child has difficulties with writing or drawing
- •The child becomes frustrated when writing or drawing
- •No diagnosed developmental disorders
- •Voluntary participation and informed consent
- •Inclusion Criteria for Parents or Legal Guardians:
- •Parent or legal guardian of a participating child
- •Sufficient proficiency in German
- •Willingness to participate in the study and use digital technologies required for the intervention
- •Written informed consent provided
