Nursesplay a vital role in advocating and implementing infection control practices andit certainly requiressome educational expertise, support from management and organizationalpolicies. Little research has been undertaken in this aspect and in India,there is a lack of published research on infection control nurses in terms ofnumbers, qualification, roles and responsibilities. There is a need for thestudy to identify the existing structure of infection control nurses, theirspecial education and their roles and responsibilities. Further, informationfrom the present study may help to develop the strategy, policy or educationalmodule for the infection control nurses. The current study will be a hospital-basedexploratory survey conducted in Karnataka state, which will be conducted in twophases; Phase 1-survey to explore the existing structure and staffing pattern of infection control department and toidentify factors affecting with infection control practices. In phase 2 Delphiwill be conducted infection control nurses to bring about strategies to improve the HospitalInfection Control Practices. Expected study outcomes are to bring about ainfection control module for the environmental and organizational structure of infection controldepartment, staff requirements, basic education, opportunities for professionaladvancements, and training sessions for the healthcare workers hindering andfavouring factors for the infection control nurses to work efficiently in thehealthcare settings. Delphi from phase 2 among selected infection control nurses will be tofind out problems and solutions for all the concerns pertaining to theinfection control nurses in order to bring about a common guideline to all the hospitalinfection control nurses.
