(1) headaches experienced after diagnosis of TMD, accompanied by one or more symptoms such as mouth-opening restriction, TMJ pain, and clicking sounds (TMJ noises); (2) score =50 points on the Headache Impact Assessment questionnaire; (3) ability to participate in the experiment (from 24 h before the assessment and during the intervention period) without using analgesics or muscle relaxants; (4) primary diagnosis of myofascial pain according to Axis I, categories Ia and Ib (i.e., myofascial pain with or without mouth-opening restriction) of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD; (5) a pain intensity of =30 mm in the masseter muscle fascia on the 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS), according to the diagnostic criteria described by Simons et al.;16 (6) a history of pain for at least three months’ duration before the study; and (7) understanding the purpose of the study and provision of written informed consent.
(1) signs or symptoms of disc displacement, arthritis, or arthrosis of the TMJ according to Axes II and III of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD; (2) a history of traumatic injury to the mandible or neck; (3) diagnosis of a systemic disease (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic iris lupus, or psoriasis arthritis); (4) fibromyalgia syndrome; (5) nervous system disorders, such as trigeminal neuralgia; (6) history of any form of treatment (physical therapy, splint therapy, acupuncture, and Botox treatment, among others) within three months preceding the study; (7) inability to stand upright for radiographic evaluation; and (8) congenital deformities of the head and neck areas.
