age =35 years
- minimum of 16 residual teeth
- untreated generalized moderate to severe chronic periodontitis with characteristic clinical inflammation symptoms
- minimum of 4 teeth with probing pocket depth =6mm
- approximal plaque index (API) =25%
- papillary bleeding index (PBI) =25%
- heavy smokers (=10 cigarettes/day in the last 12 months)
- uncontrolled medical conditions
- use of systemic antibiotics during the last three months
- periodontal treatment during the last three months
- pregnant or lactating females
- aggressive periodontitis
