Inclusion Criteria

  • To be included, the patients are supposed to: 1) be a male or a non-pregnant/non-nursing female between 18 and 65 years of age. 2) have a goal of controlled drinking. 3) have an intact sense of smell. 4) fulfill the criteria for alcohol dependence according to DSM-IV. 5) be willing to give informed consent and comply with study procedures. 6) have consumed alcohol in 12 days of the last 12 weeks.

Exclusion Criteria

  • To be included, the patients may not: 1) be seeking complete alcohol abstinence. 2) have a current use of any medication that interferes with salivation. 3) have a serious medical condition. 4) have a diagnosis of an Axis I psychiatric disorder according to DSM-IV criteria (including all forms of substance dependence other than nicotine and alcohol). 5) have a current use of psychoactive medications to manage schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. 6) have been abstinent from alcohol for 30 days or more. 7) have received inpatient alcohol detoxification within the last 4 days. 8) Have been treated with acamprosate for the last year. 9) Have used any illegal drugs for the last 30 days. 10) Use illegal drugs during the course of the study.
