- Primary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method The primary outcome measures were differences (in mm) between the groups for changes in pocket depth after 3 and 6 months compared to baseline. Probing pocket depth was measured from the free gingival margin to the bottom of the periodontal pocket with a conventional periodontal probe (PCP-UNC 15, Hu-Friedy®, Chicago, IL, USA).
- Secondary Outcome Measures
Name Time Method Secondary outcome measures included clinical attachment level (mm), bleeding on probing, Gingiva-Index simplified, Plaque-Control-Record, and counts of the bacterial species.
Clinical attachment level and bleeding on probing were measured at six sites per tooth (mesio-buccal, buccal, disto-buccal, disto-lingual, lingual and mesio-lingual) using a conventional periodontal probe (PCP-UNC 15, Hu-Friedy®, Chicago, IL, USA).
Subgingival plaque samples were collected at baseline, 3 and 6 months following treatment from the deepest pocket of each quadrant. The samples were transferred to a sterile vial (pooled sample) and sent to a commercial laboratory for analysis. The analysis was performed with a commercially available DNA probe kit (IAI Pado Test, Institute of Applied Immunology, IAI, Zuchwil, Switzerland) to identify the following periopathogenic microorganisms: A. actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), T. forsythia (Tf), P. gingivalis (Pg), and T. denticola (Td).
