An Independent Midwifery Practitioner (IMP) is a trained, experienced midwife who offers maternity care independently of a hospital or institutional setting. Unlike midwives employed by hospitals or clinics, independent midwives typically work on a freelance or self-employed basis, providing personalized and holistic care to women and families during pregnancy, labor, and the postnatal period. These practitioners focus on providing a continuity of care, often building close, trusting relationships with their clients. Independent midwives provide prenatal check-ups, offer counselling on pregnancy health, and monitor the progress of the pregnancy. They often take a more individualized approach to care, tailoring advice to the needs and preferences of the mother. They support women during labor, providing assistance in the home or birthing center if the client chooses not to give birth in a hospital. Their role includes managing normal births, offering pain relief options, and being present to guide and support the birthing process. After the birth, independent midwives ensure the physical and emotional well-being of the mother and baby. They provide breastfeeding support, monitor the baby’s growth, and help with any post-birth health concerns.
