Interviews: First child; no factors existed that could have interfered with breastfeeding; born on schedule (= 37 weeks gestation and = 41 weeks + 6 days); child was ever breastfed intervention study: First child; no abnormalities to date; no factors on the part of the mother that interfered with or precluded breastfeeding of the infant, e.g., medication; parents living in a joint household.
Interviews: Second or later child in the family; premature birth; factors on the part of the mother or infant that interfere with or preclude breastfeeding e.g. medication, LKS; infant was not breastfed intervention study: Second or later child in the family; fetal abnormality already detected before birth; premature birth; factors on the part of the mother already present before delivery that interfere with or preclude breastfeeding of the infant e.g. medication; parents do not live in 1 common household.
