Those with acute severe ulcerative colitis diagnosed on the basis of Modified Truelove and Wittââ?¬•s criteria
Patients who deny consent
Age � 18years
Pregnant and lactating women
Presence of toxic megacolon as defined by transverse colon diameter more than 5.5cm on abdominal X-ray
Infective exacerbation
Presence of dysplasia or any indication for surgery
Patients who are deemed to require surgery in next 48 hours
Diagnosis is uncertain like Crohnââ?¬•s or indeterminate colitis
Disease extent: E1 disease (15cm or less)
Very low BMI ( <15 kg/m2)
Very high risk of refeeding syndrome (prolonged fasting i.e > 3 days OR low energy diet i.e less than 50% of calorie requirement for > 7 days OR dyselectrolytemia in form of serum K of < 3 meq/L or phosphate < 2 mg/dL or Mg < 1.5 mg/dL)
