Brief Summary

This study is an observational study to assess the flow rate of major salivary glands in various types of smokers using modified schirmer’s method. Total sample size comprised of 66 subjects divided into 3 groups. Each group comprising of 22 subjects, each divided into conventional smokers, reverse smokers and nonsmokers. Measurement of unstimulated whole mouth salivary flow for three minutes was performed using “Modified Schirmer Methodâ€. The sample collection will be done between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. All the participants are asked to refrained from eating, drinking and smoking 1 hour prior to the study. The subjects are asked to sit in an upright position and to raise and slowly retract their tongue, to avoid unintentional wetting of the Schirmer test’s strip. The strip will be kept in front of the parotid gland duct i.e., at the papilla in oral cavity just opposite to the maxillary 2nd molar crown for parotid gland and for submandibular gland the strip will be kept vertically with the help of cotton pliers, while the bottom of the paper was kept in contact with the floor of the mouth. The length of the wet area on the strip was recorded at the intervals of 1, 2 and 3 minutes. The results were subjected to statistical analysis.
