Inclusion Criteria

•Acute spinal cord injury at level C3 – C8 (ASIA motor level)
•Screening within the first 8 weeks after spinal cord injury
•Age from 18 to 90 years
•Traumatic, ischemic or hemorrhagic spinal cord lesion
•Spinal disc herniation with consecutive tetraplegia

Exclusion Criteria

• other causes for tetraplegia than the inclusion criteria
• pregnancy
• underlying oncologic disease
• additional cardio-vascular, pulmonary, metabolic (e.g. diabetes mellitus), neurologic (e.g. epilepsy, neuromuscular disease) or orthopedic disease
• psychiatric disorder
• artificial pacemaker or other (electrically) active implants
• acute infection (including multi-resistant germs)
• unstable fractures or open wounds
• artificial respiration
• brachial plexus injury
• severe traumatic brain injury
• dementia or other reasons that are compromising cooperation or consent of the patient
