Depression was defined with Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale Korea version (CES-D-K) score =25, and confirmed by a psychiatrist according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) IV.
Patient were excluded if they were pregnant, lactating, under the age of 18 or over age 65, taking supplements containing n-3 PUFA, or medical comorbidity (cardiovascular disease, dementia), chronic depression lasting more than 2 years, treatment-resistant depression, and had up-normal aspartate aminotransferase (AST) or alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Based on a psychiatrist’s judgment, patients with other primary psychiatric disorder, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia were not included.
