- Brief Summary
The RCT identified that adolescents receiving BSP as a complementary therapy for aiding weight reduction and maintenance more frequently exhibited decreases in anthropometric parameters of BMI, AC, ACB, and CP after an average of 21 weeks, compared to those in the control group. Likewise, the median negative differences in z-scores of these indicators were higher in the intervention group than in the control group. However, the observed differences between the groups did not reach statistical significance. Despite this, the greater reduction in z-score values in the intervention group, whether through comparison of proportions or medians, potentially suggests BSP as a promising therapeutic approach. Specifically, the 30% difference in BMI z-score reduction between GI (90%) and GC (60%) cannot be disregarded and thus holds potential clinical significance and relevance. The absence of statistical significance might be associated with the low statistical power resulted from the reduced sample size, indicating a high possibility of Type II (Beta) error at 66.9%. Additionally, the NNT calculation suggests that incorporating BSP intervention into standard obesity treatment for a group of ten adolescents would benefit approximately three subjects with BMI z-score reduction. Therefore, BSP therapeutic intervention might be an efficient option for managing obesity in adolescents when added to standard treatment that includes medical, nutritional, and psychological support.
