1. dysphagia from a stroke that was confirmed by a videofluoroscopic swallowing study
2. onset duration > 6 months
3. able to elevate the hyoid from its depressed position when electrical stimulation was
initiated
4. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score =24.
1. psychiatric disorders or dementia
2. implanted cardiac pacemaker
3. severe communication disorder such as severe aphasia
4. history of seizure or epilepsy
5. unstable medical conditions
6. skin problems associated with electrode placement.
