Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • 1. At least 48 hours of mechanical ventilation
  • 2.Atleast two of the four clinical criteria for suspicion of VAP :
  • 2a.Temperature =38.5°C or <36°C
  • 2b.Total leucocyte count >10,000/µl or < 4,000/µl
  • 2c.Partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood to inspired oxygen fraction (P/F) ratio <300
  • 2d.Purulent tracheal secretions

Exclusion Criteria

  • 1.Pulmonary infection / Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • 2.Heart failure with or without compromised left ventricular ejection fraction, hypertensive pulmonary edema
  • 3.History of pneumonectomy, Pleurodesis, Fibrothorax
  • 4.Obese patients /Patients with thoracic dressings / drainage tubes
  • 5.Pregnancy
