Inclusion Criteria

1. Major depressive episode (MDE), unipolar, according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) as main diagnosis
2. Age 18-65 years
3. Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS)-expert rating score > 10
4. Informed consent

Exclusion Criteria

1. Psychotic disorder
2. Bipolar disorder
3. Substance abuse (current or last three years)
4. Current suicidal ideation
5. Antisocial personality disorder
6. Cognitive impairment
7. Admission for diagnostic reasons (not for treatment)
8. Second admission during recruitment period
