The study subjects consisted of adults aged 19 to 55 years with at least a six-month history of constipation according to the Rome criteria. Participants had to have at least two of the followings symptoms on greater than 25% of occasions for inclusion: straining; lumpy or hard stools; a sensation of incomplete evacuation; a sensation of anorectal obstruction/blockage; manual maneuvers to facilitate defecation; or defecation frequency less than three times per week.
In case of subjects were excluded from entering the study if they had inflammatory bowel disease or other structural bowel disease, a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), significant disorders or disease that may interfere with completion of the study or if they used laxatives two weeks prior to the start of the baseline assessment. Pregnant or breastfeeding women were excluded also. Participants reporting more than one loose or watery stool each day during the baseline period were also excluded.
