>/= 90 years of age
- asymptomatic 20-80% ICA stenosis (NASCET criteria)
- one additional cardiovascular risk factor (hypertension, smoking habit, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, peripheral artery disease, coronary heart disease, familial predisposition)
- lack of ability to consent
- refusal of study participation
- contraindications against 3 Tesla MRI (such as ferromagnetic implants, claustrophobia)
- bad clinical condition (modified ranking scale >3)
- atrial fibrillation or other relevant cardiac arrhythmias due to the interference with the ECG-trigger during 4D flow MRI
- expectation of life <2 years
- distance to place of residence >100 kilometers
- scheduled carotid artery endarterectomy
