Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- •The subjects who can fulfill the following conditions will be included in the study:
- •(1\)Normal healthy volunteers with age an range from 18 to 45
- •(2\)Male subjects alone will be studied as cognitive task performance has been shown to vary with the phases of the menstrual cycle3
- •(3\) All subjects who have six months experience of the practice of yoga
- •(4\)Willingness to participate in the trial. The regularity of yoga practice would be based on self\-reporting of the participants as well as consultations with the meditation teacher (guru)
- •(v)Apart from their prior experience of yoga, participants would be given a one month orientation program of pranayama under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher
Exclusion Criteria
- •The following criteria will be used to exclude volunteers from the trial:
- •(1\)The presence of cognitive or neurological disorders, based on a medical history and routine clinical examination. In addition the following three tests would be used:
- •a.Evidence of identifiable cognitive impairment: Cognitive functioning will be assessed using the WAIS\-III. Persons with scores lower than 80 for full scale IQ will be excluded from further participation.
- •b.The presence of a behavioral/psychological disorder: the presence of behavioral/psychological impairments will be assessed using the Symptom Checklist\-90\-R (SCL\-90\-R). Subjects with significant deviations (exceeding one standard deviation) on these instruments will be excluded from the study.
- •(2\)Intake of medication, which is known to influence cognitive or autonomic functions.
- •(3\)Smoking or alcoholism which may influence cognitive functions, sensory and motor variables.
