Brief Summary

Playing related musculoskeletal disorders are widely documented among instrumentalmusicians in developed nations. The prevalence ranges from 43% to 50%. Instrumentalistsmainly suffer from upper extremity disorders. Among theinstrumentalists, one of the risk groups is percussionists.Playing a percussion instrument demands great forceand effort, which may make percussionists proneto playing related musculoskeletal disorders . Of all percussion instruments in India,Tablais the most famous membranophone percussion instrument used in Indian classical music. As playing of theTabla involves movement of the entire arm (from shoulder joint to fingers) along with folded knees in anunsupported sitting position at a slightly forward-inclined posture, it is expected that they may suffer from various PRMDs. Although not many studies have reported the prevalence of PRMDs in Tabla players, focal dystonia has been reported., The majority of ailments in today’s rapidly evolving society may not be life threatening, butthey nonetheless have an impact on daily living and productivity. One of such diseases that causes morbidityand interferes with a Tabla player’sdaily routine is PRMD. It is one of the Vatavyadhis that affects various types of sandhis and upper limb subsequently. Yoga poses have been regarded as the most practical, cost-effective,and drug-free way to produce a variety of desired outcomes. Anyone, regardless of age, gender, location, climate, or any other such factor, can practice asanas withoutcausing any unnecessarydisruptions in their everyday pattern of life.

Asana is the ability to remain still for an extendedperiod of time in a calm and peaceful conditionwith little energy expenditure. Modern medical physicians prescribe different types of antiinflammatory analgesics to relieve these pains. Even though initially they give considerablerelief but continuous and long-term use may induce various toxic effects including drug dependency. In such a scenario there is a need for the efficient management ofPRMD with the proper lifestyle and yoga, thereby eradicating the problems fromtheir root in a natural way. The present study focuses on evaluating the efficacy of Gomukhasan, Ushtrasasna and Dhanurasasna Salbhasana in the management of PRMDs.
