• Postlinguale deafness
• native speaker competence in German language
• unilateral cochlear implant (any commonly used device with medical certification, independent from manufacturer)
• age = 18 years
• Surgery, initial fitting of the speech processor and early rehabiliation at the ENT-clinic of the Heidelberg University Hospital
• prelingual or congenital deafness
• bilateral cochlear implant
• clinical diagnosis of a serious mental, neurological or psychiatric disease (e.g. psychosis, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, drug or alcohol addiction)
• status post traumatic brain injury or cerebral ischemia
• psychotropic medication that cannot be discontinued before the cochlear implantation
• Inability to speak, read and/or comprehend German language
• Inability to give written consent
