Study Overview

Brief Summary

Successful placement of Nasogastric tube (NGT) in anaesthetised patients in operating room under General Anaesthesia appears to be challenging one compared with its insertion in awake patients owing to the lack of patients cooperation in the former. In this study, a comparison will be made between the Reverse Sellick’s Manoeuvre with Throat pack in situ and Reverse Sellick’s Manoeuvre alone for NGT placement in terms of Success in the first attempt, procedure time and incidence of adverse events.

Inclusion Criteria

  • •Adult patients undergoing elective Abdominal Surgeries under General Anaesthesia that require intra-operative NGT insertion.
  • •Patients who have given written, informed consent to participate in the study.

Exclusion Criteria

  • •Anatomical/Structural abnormalities such as gross deviated nasal septum, abnormalities involving lip and palate, etc
  • •Patient with oral, Nasal, pharyngeal or esophageal masses.
  • •Patient with significant injuries involving head and neck.
  • •Patients with thrombocytopenia or coagulopathies.

Outcomes

Primary Outcomes

Successful insertion of nasogastric tube in First attempt

Time Frame: Intra operative period (initial stage)

Secondary Outcomes

  • 1. Time taken for Successful insertion of nasogastric tube(2. Adverse events during the procedure like tube kinking, coiling etc, Blood pressure and Heart Rate changes)
