Schizophrenia:
1) Age range 20-55 years
2) Diagnosed as having schizophrenia as per DSM-V by a consultant psychiatrist
3) Duration of illness >1 year
4) Married >2 year and living with spouse
5) Patients whose course of illness is stable (antipsychotic medicines not increased
during the 3 months immediately prior to the study, no hospitalizations for MI in
last 3 months)
6) Ability to read Kannada or English
7) At least 6 years of formal education
8) Normal or corrected vision and hearing
Bipolar Disorder:
1) Age range 20-55 years
2) Diagnosed as having bipolar disorder as per DSM-V by a consultant psychiatrist
3) Duration of illness >1 year
4) Married >2 year and living with spouse
5) Patients whose course of illness is stable (mood stabilizer medicines not increased
during the 3 months immediately prior to the study, no hospitalizations for MI in
last 3 months)
6) Ability to read Kannada or English
7) At least 6 years of formal education
8)Normal or corrected vision and hearing
Spouse
1) Age range 20-55 years
2)Married >2 years and living with spouse diagnosed with schizophrenia, or bipolar
disorder
3) Ability to read Kannada or English
4) At least 6 years of formal education
5) Normal or corrected vision and hearing
Patient
1) History of or current medical illness that may significantly influence CNS
function or structure (including mental retardation, significant head injury)
2) Pregnancy or postpartum ( < 6 weeks after delivery or miscarriage)
3) Co-morbidity for psychoactive substance dependence (except nicotine) within the
past 6 months
Spouse
1)History of or current psychiatric illness
2) History of or current medical illness that may significantly influence CNS
function or structure (including mental retardation, significant head injury)
3) Pregnancy or postpartum ( < 6 weeks after delivery or miscarriage)
4) Co-morbidity for psychoactive substance dependence (except nicotine) within the
past 6 months

Name Time Method To find the relationship between social cognition and marital quality among <br/ ><br>patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.Timepoint: 3 months since last hospitalisation, and no change in treatment.

Name Time Method ï?· To compare marital quality between patients with bipolar disorder and their <br/ ><br>spouses, and patients with schizophrenia and their spouses. <br/ ><br>ï?· To compare social cognition between patients with bipolar disorder and patients with schizophrenia.Timepoint: 3 months since last hospitalisation, and no change in treatment.
