Inclusion Criteria
Known clinician made diagnosis of COPD with supporting spirometry or a high probability of the disease (on the basis of clinical history, smoking history, physical examination and chest radiograph).
Adult males and females.
Exclusion Criteria
Patients admitted to the ICU with COPD but in whom this was not the primary reason for admission (such as those with COPD admitted after surgery or trauma) were excluded.
