Inclusion Criteria

Only healthy adults, aged between 18 and 60 years and able to walk, stand and carry a crate of 5kg barefoot, in a control- and in an unstable shoe, are included.

Exclusion Criteria

Subjects with musculoskeletal disease (scoliosis, amputation, acute/ chronic pain), neurological disease, a body mass index <18 or >30 or Diabetes Mellitus type I or II are excluded. Subjects are also excluded if they are pregnant or have practical experience with unstable shoes (MBT, Reebock easy tone, kyBoot, Joyssy, Joya, Sketcher’s Shape Up).

Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Primary outcome is muscle activity of following muscles:
- tibialis anterior
- gastrocnemius medialis
- peroneus longus
- vastus medialis
- biceps femoris
- gluteus medius
- multifidi (lumbar)
- obliquus externus.
Muscle activity will be measured using surface EMG (myon 320, myon AG) that will be sended (1000Hz) to the computer by an EMG-sensor (myon 320, myon AG) . Therefor, two electrodes (Ambu BlueSensor N, Ambu A7S) will be used per muscle of the trunk and right leg (Seniam). Data will be processed by Vicon Nexus Software (Version 2.4) and analysed with ProEMG (Version 2.0, prophysics) and SPSS (version 21).
According to a defined threshold each muscle is set on or off.
Intensity (root mean square) of muscle activation, duration of muscle activation (%) and time of muscle activation (%) are of interest. One gait cycle is defined as 100%. In the walking conditions, mean values of seven trials are used, whereas in standing, we will use one value of 30 seconds.
Secondary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Secondary outcome is the average loading rate (ground reaction force), defined as the rate of increase of GRF between 20-80% of the time between right heel strike and impact peak. Ground reaction force values will be delivered by two force plates. This outcome will be measured only in the walking conditions and will be calculated as the mean value of seven trials. Kinematic (angle, position) data of the lower limb (foot, knee, hip) and trunk will be measured by an optoelectronic system (Nexus Vicon Software).
