- Brief Summary
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as glucose intolerance during pregnancy. GDM is the most common complication noted due to increased metabolic stress during pregnancy. The prevalence of GDM is increasing globally due to various genetic and lifestyle-related factors. The prevalence of GDM is 10-14.3% in India, which is higher than in western countries.
GDM may leads to an increased risk of fetal and maternal complications. Screening for GDM will help prompt diagnosis and can avoid further complications associated with mother and fetus. It is reported that screening of GDM can be best done during the 24-28 th week of gestation as there is chances of increased insulin resistance during this period.
The Diabetes in Pregnancy Study group India (DIPSI) recommends one-step procedure for diagnosis of GDM.The present study was planned to analyze the prevalence of GDM and associated outcomes in Indian pregnant women.
