Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • Alcohol dependence as per ICD\-10 Research Diagnostic Criteria.
  • Having one or more first degree relatives with history of alcohol dependence syndrome.
  • Early onset of alcohol dependence (onset and dependence of alcohol in or less than 25 years of age).
  • Currently receiving inpatient treatment for alcohol dependence
  • Age between 18 to 45 years
  • Right handedness
  • Minimum education of 8th standard.
  • English, Hindi or Kannada speaking

Exclusion Criteria

  • Presence of substance dependence other than tobacco. Keeping in mind the ubiquitousness of tobacco use in the population, tobacco abuse was not an exclusion criteria.
  • Any other major psychiatric disorder, except externalizing spectrum disorders. This is because of the etiological factor and high co\-morbidity with early onset alcohol dependence.
  • Co\-morbid major medical or neurological disorders.
  • ï??Score on Hindi Mental State Examination (HMSE) less than 25\.
  • Family history of psychiatric disorder (other than alcohol dependence) in first degree relatives.
  • Mental retardation based on clinical evaluation.
