- Brief Summary
**Background:** There is high prevalence of DM (Diabetes mellites) in patients of cirrhosis. Diabetes has been implicated for complication in post-transplant patients. Glycated haemoglobin(HbA1c) is now targeted as a modifiable risk factors for postoperative complications. **Aims:** In this retrospective study we looked for co-relation between preoperative HbA1c level and post-operative mortality and morbidity in patients of liver transplant (LT). **Material and methods:** Retrospective data for adult patients operated upon for LT was retrieved. Patients were divided into 2 groups on the basis of HBA1c levels (Group1-less than; Group 2-equal to more than 6.5%) **Results**: 400 patients were operated for LT. After exclusion data was analysed for 224 patients. 72(32%) had DM. Patients with DM had higher body mass index (24.3±4.9). Insulin requirement was higher in Group 2. No correlation was seen for HBA1c levels and postoperative cardiovascular, renal, central nervous complications. No difference was seen between 2 groups for duration of surgery, volume of blood loss, need for renal replacement therapy, incidence of infections, rejection, need for re-exploration surgery and duration of ICU, hospital stay and survival between this two groups. **Conclusion:** Diabetes mellitus is seen in around one third of patients with cirrhosis of liver. Presence of diabetes does not add to post-operative complication in liver transplant patients. Uncontrolled DM remains insulin depended after transplant
