Brief Summary

? Implementation and evaluation of the worksite smoking cessation program - A total of seven worksites and 89 employees participated in the program. - The worksites could be divided in office job, phone customer service, sales business, and transportation services companies. The modality of the intervention used (face-to-face or by phone) was different depending on the type of worksite. - By the end of the intervention, among the 89 participants 32.6% (n=29) showed a 6-week quit smoking rate, and 43.8% (n=39) were current non-smokers (less than 6-weeks of abstinence). Among current smokers 68.0% had made attempts to quit smoking during the program period. - There were some limitations regading participants due to the drop-outs at some worksites, rejection of applying environmental diagnosis survey, and lack of cooperation of the managerial person. To amend these limitations, we had to recruit additional worksites, modified some items of the survey, and talked with employees and employers to sensitize them about the program and to improve their level of cooperation and commitment. ? Economic Analysis - The economic analysis of the present study was conducted in two parts: productivity loss and medical expenses. The productivity loss was calculated based on the expenses collected from smoking time among smoking employees. The analysis showed that by the implementation of the present program there was a reduction in the amount of productivity loss. - We found a total reduction among participant worksites of 77,015,790 KWR in the productivity loss between the start of the program and the end point, which was a four month period. With these analyses we could estimate that if successful quitters continue abstinent for a 1 year period, the loss in productivity would be reduced by 92,101,358 KWR per year, and if the abstinence continues for 2 years, then the reduction in productivity loss cost would be 179,816,935 KWR. - Return on investment (ROI) was calculated in two manners: one was the amount of productivity loss reduction plus the medical expense saved amount, and the other one was the productivity loss. The ROI obtained based on the analysis of the amount of productivity loss was 3.8 points, while the productivity loss plus the medical expenses reduction was 4.55 points. This indicated a benefit of net savings was 3.8 times higher than the program implementation costs when productivity loss was considered. Also a benefit of net savings was 4.6 times higher than the program implementation costs when both productivity loss plus the medical expenses reduction were considered.
