1) one missing or failing tooth being an incisor, canine or first premolar in the maxilla with
neighbouring natural teeth;
2) presence of a defect of the buccal bone wall as noticed immediately after tooth extraction (not applicable for cases with a missing tooth);
3) at least 18 year of age;
4) ASA score = 2 (Smeets et al. 1998);
5) adequate oral hygiene, i.e. Plaque Index Score (Silness and Lo?, 1964) and Gingival Index
Score (Silness and Lo?, 1964) = 1;
6) mesial-distal width of diastema at least 6 mm;
7) patient is capable of understanding and giving informed consent
1) smoking;
2) a history of radiotherapy to the head and neck region;
3) use of intravenous bisphosphonates shorter than 10 years ago.
