Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
We prospectively examine breathing circuits for contamination. This study is performed in the clinic of anesthesia and intensive care medicine of the university hospital of Heidelberg, Germany. The effects of a one day vs. seven day use of the breathing circuits concerning microbial and viral contamination will be studied.
To our knowledge, this study will test for the first time in practice, whether breathing circuits are protected against contamination with respiratory viruses by the use of breathing system filters between tracheal tube and the breathing system.
Secondary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
Further the contamination of breathing circuits will be examined after use for patients with known MDR colonization or for patients with known viral infection. The results will be compared with the findings in circuits applied for patients without known risk factors.
