The carbon footprint of anaesthesia refers to the environmental impact of anaesthetic gases and
materials used in medical procedures. Certain anaesthetic gases are greenhouse gases, contributing
to climate change and single use materials generate significant waste. Reducing the carbon footprint
in anaesthesia can help make healthcare more sustainable without compromising patient care and
safety.
As healthcare moves towards sustainability, understanding the specific carbon contributions of
different medical practices is essential. There is limited research quantifying the carbon
footprint of anaesthesia practices. There is no study that has addressed carbon footprint of
anaesthesia practice in India. Therefore, this study seeks to fill the knowledge gap by conducting
a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of anaesthesia and identify
opportunities for reducing GHG emissions without compromising patient care and safety.
This is an prospective, non-interventional observational with study duration of 2 months. Energy
consumption of various gases, medications, consumables, single use and reusable devices/
linen, and energy consumption for each anaesthesia workstation and related sources and
carbon dioxide emission will be calculated using standard emissions factor. In addition, this
study will help identify opportunities for minimising greenhouse gas emission and thus play a
small but positive role towards minimising climate change.

- •If more than 50 percent of data is missing per procedure and cannot be retrieved from hospital EMR.
