(a) Guideline-based qualitative interviews
- Patients: at least 18 years old; able to give consent; good German language skills; diagnosis of an incurable lung cancer (stage IV); willingness to participate in the study
- Patient relatives: at least 18 years old; able to give consent; good German language skills; willingness to participate in the study
(b) Focus group
- Medical and nursing staff: Nursing staff of the oncological wards, the palliative care units and the chemotherapy outpatient clinic as well as doctors of the Thoraxklinik Heidelberg gGmbH who work in oncology; at least 2 years of professional experience on the respective wards; good knowledge of German
(c) Testing (Think-aloud method)
- Patients: at least 18 years old; able to give consent; good German language skills; diagnosis of an incurable lung cancer (stage IV); willingness to participate in the study
- Patient representatives: at least 18 years old; able to give consent; good German language skills; willingness to participate in the study

- patients: Insufficient knowledge of German; is in a state of health that does not allow conversations due to a vital threat; has limitations in cognitive function, is a minor, unable to give consent
- relatives of the patients: German language skills insufficient, underage, unable to give consent
(b) Focus group
- Medical and nursing staff: less than 2 years of professional experience on the oncology wards, the palliative ward or the chemotherapy outpatient clinic; nursing staff from other wards than those mentioned above; interns, visiting and visiting physicians
(c) Testing (Think-aloud method)
- patients: Insufficient knowledge of German; is in a state of health that does not allow conversations due to a vital threat; has limitations in cognitive function, is a minor, unable to give consent
- patient representatives: German language skills insufficient, underage, unable to give consent
