  • Patients undergoing heart surgery
  • Coronary artery or valve transplant surgery

Exclusion Criteria

  • tracheal or oesophageal stricture
  • tracheo\-oesophageal fistula
  • history of oesophageal surgery
  • oesophageal varix
  • oesophageal trauma
  • oesophageal diverticulum
  • Barrett’s oesophagus
  • hiatus hernia
  • large descending aortic aneurysm or vocal cord paralysis
