Inclusion Criteria
Hypertension;
BP <160/90 on no antihypertensive drugs, BP <140/85 on two drugs, BP 140-170/90 on 1 drug.
Male or female of any age.

Exclusion Criteria
Compelling indication for beta blockers
Contra-indication to or previous intolerance of thiazide diuretics or beta blockers
Asthma
Diabetes
Concurrent treatment with verapamil/diltiazem
Heart Failure
AV conduction disturbances
Atrial fibrilation
Co-existing clinically important conditions which may interfere with the study
