This is study to compare efficacy of two beta blockers, propanolol and carvedilol combined with endoscopic therapy for reduction of pressure in veins draining blood from liver to heart and risk of rebleeding in patients with first episode of bleed from dilated esophgeal blood vessels

Chronic liver disease patients presenting with first episode of variceal bleeding and consenting for the study
1. Failure to give consent to participate in the study
2. Previous medical, surgical or endoscopic treatment for portal hypertension.
3. Child-Pugh score >9
4. Neoplastic disease of any site
5. Splenic or portal vein thrombosis
6. Pregnancy
7. Contraindication to beta-blockers (atrioventricular block, sinus bradycardia with heart rate <50 beats per minute, arterial hypotension with systolic blood pressure <90 mm Hg, heart failure, asthma, peripheral arterial disease, or diabetes needing insulin treatment)
8. Renal failure
9. Bleeding other than esophageal varix
10. Inability to come for follow up
