Predicting hypoglycemia after treatment of hyperkalemia with insulin and glucose

Completed
Conditions
Hyperkalemia is one of important conditions that we should not underestimate it. Global prevalence of hyperkalemia is reported to be 5%. The current regimen of hyperkalemic patients is managed by 10 international units (IU) regular insulin with 25 grams glucose intravenously (IV) contributed to hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is a common complication of insulin treatment in hyperkalemic patients.

Brief Summary

Background: We aimed to develop a predictive scoring model. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted. We included the hyperkalemic patients who were treated with 10 units of IV regular insulin with 25 g of glucose. Results: Three criteria were age more than 60 years old, pretreatment blood glucose 100 mg/dL or less, and pretreatment potassium more than 6 mmol/L. Conclusion: A high risk for posttreatment hypoglycemia was indicated if the patient met at least one of those criteria.
