Assessment Of Impact Of Point-of-care HbA1c Testing On Glycemic Control In People Living With Diabetes Attending A Health And Wellness Centre Of West Bengal, India: A Quasi-experimental Study

Background

Lack fo compliance to blood investigations is one of the reasons for poor glycemic control among diabetics attending NCD clinics of HWCs. Point of care testing of HbA1c might be helpful in improving the blood investigation compliance and result in better glycemic control.

Objectives

Primary To assess the impact of POC HbA1c testing on glycemic status of diabetics attending to the NCD clinics of HWC-UPHC of Kalyani, West Bengal

secondary To assess the impact of POC HbA1c testing on patient satisfaction and compliance to blood investigations and medications

Methodology

It will be a quasi-experimental study conducted in NCD clinics of two HWC-UPHCs of Kalyani, West Bengal considering one HWC-UPHC as intervention and other as control arm. Data on glycemic status (FBS, PPBS or HbA1c), compliance to blood investigations and medications and patient satisfaction will be collected apart from sociodemographic and comorbidity details at 0,3 and 6 months. Point of care HbA1c testing before physician consultation along with routine NCD care will be provided at 0, 3 and 6 months in the intervention HWC-UPHC while routine NCD care will be provided at control HWC-UPHC. The change in the proportion of diabetics under glycemic control will be determined and compared between the interventiona and control arms.

Expected outcomes

Evidence will be generated regarding impact of POC HbA1c testing on glycemic status of diabetics attending to the NCD clinics of HWC-UPHC and will aid in formulating polies accordingly.
