Inclusion Criteria
Patients with sepsis or septic shock who are admitted to the intensive care unit
Exclusion Criteria
Previously known thiamine deficiency patients
Patients who have been on supplemental thiamine prior to admission
Patients on regular alcohol consumption
Patients with liver dysfunction (AST/ALT >240 U/L) as patients with liver dysfunction may have elevated thiamine levels
Cirrhotic patients
Patients on dialysis, where thiamine can be eliminated .
Patients on any medications which can cause lactate elevation.
