Inclusion Criteria

Inclusion criteria are healthy adults aged 18-35 years.

Exclusion Criteria

Exclusion criteria constists of musculoskeletal injuries and previous experience with regular barefoot training (Barefoot runners, gymnasts, barefoot combat sports …). Furthermore, contraindication for participation in MRT studies (metallic implants, tattoos …) lead to exclusion. Furthermore, particpants will be excluded if they are already familiar with regular barefoot exercise (for example, barefoot runners, gymnast, martial artist).

Study & Design

Study Type
interventional

Primary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
The primary outcome in this study is the balance time on the stabilometer. Will training in different conditions (barefoot vs. shod) result in differences in the balance time? This outcome is determined after the intervention, during the post-measurements. On the measuring instrument stabilometer participants have to balance a platform that is freely swinging. It is used to termin the balance time. The maximum achievable balance time is 30 sec.
Secondary Outcome Measures
NameTimeMethod
The following parameters are secondary outcomes:

- Balance Error Scoring System (BESS test)
- Prevalence of forefoot striking when running
- Ankle and knee joint kinematics
- Electromyography (on the right leg M. vastus medialis, M.grastrocnemius medial and M. soleus)
- Spiroergometry
- Tactile absolute thresholds and least perceptible differences on the hands and feet
- Cognitive improvements (memory, attention)
- Structural MRT.

These target variables are also determined after the intervention, during the post-measurements. Measurement methods and instruments such as: 3D-Kinematic (Vicon), plantar pressure distribution measurement (Zebris), the surface EMG to determine muscle activity during running, the lactate values of the performance diagnostics (Spiroergometry), determined the absolute and difference thresholds on the hands and feet as well as the imaging from the structural MRT.
