Inclusion Criteria

Geriatric patients defined as
1. Age > 70 years with 2 or more chronic diseases or
2. Age > 80 years
3. Elective or urgent cardiac surgery with sternotomy

Exclusion Criteria

Emergency operations
Unstable patients (dyspnoe or angina at rest, cardiogenic shock)
Patients on mechanical ventilation
Inability to give informed consent
